10. Cruise (CRZ)
Aim
Determine the candidate’s ability to establish the aeroplane in cruising flight at the pre-planned power settings in accordance with the POH/AFM and to determine the candidate’s ability to comply with enroute procedures as cleared.
Description
The candidate will establish the aeroplane in cruising flight in accordance with the performance charts in the POH/AFM, placards displayed in the aeroplane or any other means authorized by the manufacturer. In addition, the candidate will maintain the aircraft on the enroute course and comply with enroute procedures, as cleared, in accordance with Visual or Instrument Flight Rules, as applicable. The candidate will demonstrate the proper programming and use of Flight Management Systems as applicable.
Performance Criteria
(06/2017 FTG p.26)
- select and use the appropriate communications frequencies;
- select and identify the navigation aids associated with the proposed enroute phase;
- perform the aircraft checklist items relative to the phase of flight;
- intercept, in a timely manner, all tracks, radials and bearings appropriate to the route or clearance;
- adhere to the enroute procedures;
- maintain proper aircraft control and flight within operating limitations;
- maintain assigned heading, tracks or bearings within ±10 degrees, and altitude within ±100 feet;
- set the power/throttle(s), propeller and mixture controls at the pre-planned power setting, as recommended by the POH/AFM;
- synchronize propellers;
- apply any additional measures recommended by the manufacturer with respect to aircraft configuration or other considerations; and
- confirm cruise performance and demonstrate good decision-making to deal with the consequences of variances from the expected performance (ETA revision, fuel management).
Commenting a "1"
- Cruised on wrong ATC frequency. No communication for ______ minutes.
- Selected wrong navaid, deviated from ATC clearance.
- Did not call for/perform checklists as per SOP.
- Proceeded outbound from _____ VOR without intercepting _______ until ATC called.
- Cruise established at an incorrect altitude for the direction of flight.
- Speed deviation/altitude deviation of _______ kts/feet due to incorrect autoflight discipline.
- Did not detect fuel consumption discrepancy from planned performance.
- Unable to plan/execute weather deviation.
- Unable to revise ETA/Fuel at destination.
- Unable to program FMS after rerouting.
- Didn't use anti-ice despite obvious icing conditions.
Commenting a "2"
- Did not switch to correct ATC frequency. Required help to find correct frequency and re-establish communication.
- Intercepted radial from incorrect navaid. Correct path only established after prompting from ATC.
- Levelled off at an incorrect cruise altitude for direction of flight. Corrected shortly thereafter.
- Lack of autoflight discipline induced altitude/speed deviations which were corrected after prompting from other crewmember.
- Hesitation in quantifying fuel consumption discrepancy from planned performance.
- Weather deviation initiated late, required extensive manoeuvring.
- Did not revise ETA/Fuel at destination until prompted by Operations Control.
- Laborious rerouting on FMS. Required three attempts to complete.
- Misapplication of anti-ice required coaching from other CM
